The Top Telly & Movies Hitting Our Screens In 2021

If there’s one silver lining capable of reviving our frazzled spirits, it’s a new drop of water-cooler tv drama and film. Here’s a look at some of the highlights set to make 2021 a very watchable year indeed.

Last year was an unbelievable year for tv, with Normal People, I May Destroy You, The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit and Tiger King all providing a much-needed distraction from the relentless doom of the real world.

There’s no better antidote to cure those January blues than hordes of acclaimed series and hotly anticipated movies

If there’s one silver lining capable of reviving our frazzled spirits, it’s a new drop of water-cooler tv drama and film. There’s no better antidote to cure those January blues than hordes of acclaimed series and hotly anticipated movies, and with a bunch of shows that should have been released last year now rescheduled for 2021, we’re in for a big 12 months of entertainment.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights set to make 2021 a very watchable year indeed.

The Serpent

Dr Who’s Jenna Coleman stars in this eight-part BBC true crime drama about serial killer Charles Sobhrajm (nicknamed “The Serpent” and “The Bikini Killer”) who was eventually captured and put on trial in 1976. At the time of writing, the first episode would have already premiered in the UK on BBC One and on Netflix elsewhere. Get watching!

Anatomy of a Scandal

From the creator of HBO’s Big Little Lies, this new series roughly follows the same storyline as the best-selling novel of the same name. Westminster politician James Whitehouse’s marriage begins to unravel when he’s accused of raping his political aide. Starring Sienna Miller, Michelle Dockery and Rupert Friend, it’s set to be a searing exploration of sexual consent and privilege. Exact release date tbc but 2021 is looking promising.

The Dig

A cosy and nostalgic literary adaptation is just what we need to brighten up a glum Jan. Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes and Lily James star in The Dig, a film dramatization of the real excavation that took place in Suffolk’s Sutton Hoo and led to a ground-breaking historical discovery. Landing on Netflix January 29.

Pieces Of A Woman

New to Netflix, this gut-wrenching drama starring Vanessa Kirby tells the story of a homebirth gone terribly wrong and a couple grappling with the unimaginable grief that follows. Coming January 7, 2021.

Cruella

Emma Stone plays the iconic Disney villain Cruella de Vil in this live-action prequel of The Hundred and One Dalmatians, set to be released May 28. Following in Maleficent’s footsteps, we’re going to find out what happened to Cruella before she turned to a life of puppy-skinning crime. Who doesn’t love a backstory?

The Heights

The eagerly-anticipated film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical is here. Despite initial plans to hit theatres in 2020, production was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic but at the time of writing, the street party is back on and set for UK release on July 30. Dancing isn’t cancelled anymore, guys.

Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer

Beneath the sunlit glamour of 1985 LA, lurks a relentlessly evil serial killer known as The Night Stalker. “He just stared at me like a killer clown”, something tells us we’ll need to watch this true crime drama through trembling fingers. Find it on Netflix, January 13.

The Witcher Season 2

The fantasy drama will return for its second series sometime this year. Bring back Henry Cavill and his magnificent white wig. Buzzing! Exact release date tbc.

The Pembrokeshire Murders

The three-part drama follows Welsh detective Steve Wilkins, played by Beauty and the Beast’s Luke Evans, as he races to find evidence to convict cold-blooded serial killer John Cooper (Keith Allen) of two unsolved double murders. Catch the first episode on ITV on January 11, 9pm.

Line of Duty

The BBC police drama returns this March for a sixth series after filming was unavoidably impacted by You Know What. Welcome back AC-12.

Peaky Blinders

Despite the gloomy season five finale, the highly anticipated series is back for round six. Although we might not see it until the very, very end of 2021, we have hope. Hold onto your hats.

Dune

Based on Frank Herbert’s iconic fantasy epic and directed by sci-fi maestro Denis Villeneuve, the first of two Dune movies is set to hit cinemas in October 2021 (fingers crossed). Featuring an all-star cast led by Timothee Chalamet, we can’t wait to see what Villeneuve has up his sleeve with this one.

Space Jam: A New Legacy

The legendary cartoon characters will once again be hitting the court for a high stakes basketball game in this Looney Tunes’ sequel, now joined by NBA champ LeBron James. Coming to cinemas July 16 – save the date!

Tom & Jerry

Everyone’s favourite cartoon frenemies are back on screen for another game of cat and mouse. The movie, expected in March 2021, tells the story of how their famous rivalry began. Bring on the high jinks.

You Season 3

A third helping of the serial killer trash we can’t get enough of. Although the popular Netflix stalker series is yet to confirm a release date, it should be this year (touch wood). Here’s your friendly reminder to shut your curtains.

Journaling For Mental Health: How To Get Into The Habit Of Writing For You

If you’re new to journaling or you’ve lost your way with your practice, here’s some useful tips for getting into the habit of writing for yourself.

Journal practice can work wonders for mental clarity and mindfulness. From tracking your feelings, anxiety triggers and your menstrual cycle to savouring life’s simple pleasures, expressive writing can be a great tool for connecting with your truth and expressing daily gratitude and positivity.

If you’re new to journaling or you’ve lost your way with your practice, here’s some useful tips for getting into the habit of writing for yourself.

Make it a regular ritual

Experiment with different times and settings and see what feels most valuable to you.

Carve out a regular slice of time for your journaling and be consistent with it, whether that be a short burst first thing in the morning whilst savouring your cup of coffee, last thing at night before you hit the pillow or a big journal session once a week. Prioritising your writing practice just like any other form of self-care, will set you up for success and encourage you to check in with yourself each day. Experiment with different times and settings and see what feels most valuable to you.

Lean into your writing

Much like heading out for a power walk or blitzing the house top to bottom when you’re feeling stressed, turning to you journal in your hour of need comes highly recommended. Granting yourself the space to sit and write can help you make sense of your worries and process everything from arguments to five-year plans and creative pursuits.

Journal freely

These pages are yours, so whenever you feel a pressure to censor and self-edit your thoughts and feelings, breathe and let go.

You don’t need to make poetry with your words, it just needs to be honest and judgement-free. These pages are yours, so whenever you feel a pressure to censor and self-edit your thoughts and feelings, breathe and let go. Successful journaling practice starts when you write without inhibition. Make it your very own beautiful mess and write for your eyes only. It doesn’t need to be polished and ready to publish.

Take pride in your tools

Journaling can be as fancy pants or as basic as you want to make it, the point is it should be a pleasure. Like drinking a glass of water after a long walk or lighting a candle to mark the end of your working day, it should be a welcoming and meditative ritual and if that means investing in a beautiful notebook you can treasure for years to come and colour coded pens for every mood, so be it.

Set your intention

If you find the thought of staring at a blank page each day a little too daunting, use writing prompts or templates to set the intention of your practice and give your writing structure and purpose. I.e. What three things am I grateful for today? Or, what inspired me today? What colour was my day, today?

It’s ok if you don’t feel like writing…

On days when journaling feels like one painfully mammoth task, feel free to rest and revisit another day.

Whilst it’s good to be consistent with your journaling, sometimes certain life events mean we can’t always confront our feelings or our truth with such head-on acceptance. Sometimes, writing and working through our difficulties is healing and other times it’s just not the right time. On days when journaling feels like one painfully mammoth task, feel free to rest and revisit another day.

Experiment with different journal forms

There is a myriad of ways to journal. For some, putting to pen to paper is all part of the experience. The texture of the paper and the sound of the pen scribbling across the page is all part of a sensory and tactile practice but for others, focusing on handwriting just exacerbates the pressure to get it perfectly neat. Tune into what feels good for you! If you’re visual, maybe a doodle journal with a few sentences is a more suitable way to express your creativity and if you’re always on the go, maybe a digital journal is the way forward. There is no wrong way to journal, so do it your way.

If in doubt, focus on gratitude

On the days when the writing has all dried up, turn your focus to the ultimate mood-booster: gratitude journaling. It’ll help your words flow, promote positivity and give you that much needed motivation to carry on with your practice. Zero in on a handful of things you appreciate that day and really bask in the emotion of gratitude.

Switch up your environment

Your setting matters so if you’re feeling uninspired, try writing somewhere new or take your journal outside and get the senses going. Forest bathing and journaling sounds like a 10/10 self-care practice to us.

Make a writing playlist

Some of us need complete silence whilst others prefer the ambient noise of a café or a favourite playlist, if that’s you, block out the rest of the world and set the mood for your journaling session with a gentle soothing playlist. That way it’s just you, your journal and your writerly bops.

Are you into journaling? What are some of your top tips for beginners?

13 Questions With Luke Catleugh

Luke is a self-confessed foodie cooking one delicious thing after another on his Instagram and YouTube channel. You can also find him shopping, decorating, travelling and generally being a beautiful positive ray of light online!

First of all, Happy New Year! What are you looking to get out of 2021?

Happy new year to you too guys! Gosh, 2020 has been a really tough year for everyone and I know we will all be happy to start afresh in 2021. I am really hoping to just be healthy and happy, that will be my priority. I watched one of my first YouTube videos of 2020 back last week and in the video, I was discussing things I wanted to achieve in 2020. I think this year has taught me that so many things are out of our control and that we just need to take it easy sometimes and not put too much pressure on ourselves to smash goals or life achievements.

If anything, for 2021 I just want to prioritise my health and wellbeing. I think it is super important to check in with yourself regularly, take time out when you need it and really do the things that make your heart happy. My only other hope is that myself and my good friend Zara are going to put the steps in place to hopefully buy a house together which we are beyond excited for if everything goes to plan. Fingers crossed!

Talk us through your career online and how it’s evolved?

Whenever I think of my life online it makes me feel beyond lucky and grateful to call this my job. Like so many others, I grew up watching YouTubers. I was just a little guy in his small room in Durham watching these really cool people make videos from their bedrooms. I would rush home after school and turn on our computer and check to see if anyone had uploaded a new video.

I started my blog back in 2012 called ‘Luke Does Life’ documenting my outfits and things I had cooked or baked (I haven’t archived the blog as I love to look back at it for the laughs but also just remind myself of how far I have come).

I got my first job in my local pub at 13, washing dishes on Sundays after people would come for their roast dinners. I stayed there for quite some time until I got a job at Bill’s restaurant in 2013 as a Waiter. I started to take photos of the food that the restaurant served mainly because I loved the menu and was so proud of how far I had come since my pot washing early teen days. The woman who ran the social media accounts for Bill’s spotted my photos and invited me to London to help shoot some food content for Christmas. To this day, we still chat and I am so grateful for everything she taught me.

I moved to London in September 2016 to start university. I studied Magazine Journalism and Publishing in the hope that I could one day I could be a food writer. I thought whilst being at university I wanted to document my time there. I started my YouTube channel in April 2017. My first video was a trip to Brighton, it was my dream to go one day after watching so many people I loved online visit. I just threw myself into vlogging in pubic. I went on my own and just explored the town, it was by far the most nervous I had ever felt. I worked part-time in coffee shops and retail alongside my degree and filming videos for YouTube on the side. Since then I have graduated from university and have been SO lucky to make YouTube and content creating my full-time job since June 2019.

What are your favourite things to film for YouTube?

I absolutely love getting in the kitchen. My whole family are foodies so I have grown up with the kitchen being the heart of the home. I love filming my 5-midweek meal ideas and any baking videos just bring me so much joy!

I also really love vlogs, they are the reason I started YouTube. I am a big one for memories and love to document everything I do. I keep receipts, tickets, essentially anything I can that remind me of a time in my life. So daily/weekly vlogs are so lovely to film and watch back.

We love your second IG account @lukecatleugheats have you always been into cooking and food?

Ahh thank you so much! I really need to get back into posting on there more often. I found myself gearing more towards YouTube for my food content as I found it easier to share visually and talk through the process.

For me, food is everything. It is the first thing I think of when I wake up and arguably the last thing I think of when I go to bed. Food is memories and it transports me back to a happy place. My Nana’s cakes were legendary and my Mam’s roast is second to none, these memories of food are my happy place. I remember one day I came home from school and used a spare notepad I had to start writing down everything my Mam cooked in the hope that one day, I could cook like her. I still have it to this day, although my handwriting is pretty illegible ha!

What are some of your top goals you’d like to achieve in your career?

I would honestly say that doing what I get to do for a job makes me feel like the luckiest person alive.

It would be a dream to one day release a cookbook. I know it sounds cliche and it’s a big goal but I would absolutely love to. I know they are SO much work, you literally have to try and test every recipe and there are so many wonderful ones already published, but I would love to do it almost as a memoir of every dish I love.

We know you like to travel, where is top of your list when we’re able to again?

Oh my goodness I miss travelling. I know it is such a luxury to travel and this year has really reminded me how much I enjoy it.

I solo travelled before I went to university for two months across America. It was the scariest thing I have ever done but by far the best. I really want to return to New York, it’s my favourite city in the world.

I would also absolutely love to go somewhere new and I feel like my skin needs some serious vitamin D. Any remote island would be a dream. I love Greece, the Mamma Mia island Skopelos or Naxos would be amazing just to get stuck into a good book and fully relax.

What would you say is your biggest achievement to date?

I would say moving to London and really pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I got so stuck in my life and knew from a very early age that I wanted to see more of the world and meet more people. It was by far the best thing I did and gave me the confidence to put myself online. I really struggled with my self worth and saying yes to anything. However, since moving to London it really showed me that I can do anything if I am willing to say yes.

What are you currently working on?

I don’t have any big projects at the moment, I just really want to focus on refining my content on YouTube and keeping a balance between food and lifestyle videos. I absolutely love creating recipe videos and a lot of viewers are asking for an online guide/virtual recipe book where they can see everything I have made. I have that on my list of things I would like to make for 2021!

Who are some of your favourite follows online?

I follow people online who bring me happiness and comfort from all walks of life and who share a variation of content. Some of my favourites are:

@lisadawson – she shares gorgeous interior content on Instagram and her stories are so real and honest about life online and also being a mum!

@iamtabithabrown – is possibly one of the most infectiously positive people I have ever followed. Her outlook on life, her recipes and her smile genuinely brightens my day.

@Lonefoxhome – Drew Scott – one of the OG interior YouTubers, his DIY’s are amazing and the spaces her creates are incredible.

@theptchef – Oli Brandon I am fairly new to TikTok (I am yet to post anything but I love what others create) – his recipes are so easy to follow and genuinely make me want to get in the kitchen and try something new!

What do you always carry with you?

My camera I use to vlog, I rarely leave the house without it. It’s the classic G7X ii, by far the best point and shoot camera I have owned. It takes great photos, video and also is the perfect pocket size and of course hand sanitiser and a face covering (the bolder the better!)

What does your perfect weekend look like?

About a year ago, I would have said getting lost in the streets of a city I had never been to. But the year just gone has given me a whole new sense of appreciation and gratitude for my home and how lucky we are to have such a lovely space.

So my perfect weekend would probably be spent watching movies, reading, going for long walks with my families little Labrador who I miss dearly and lots of baking. Sandwich in a cheeky nap and that right there is my idea of perfection.

If you could only eat one meal again what would it be?

Pasta of ANY kind. I have repeatedly asked my Mam if we have some Mediterranean or Italian heritage in our family because I could genuinely eat pasta for the rest of my life. I had the most incredible garlic, lemon and chilli linguine in Florence a couple of years back and to this day, it remains my favourite meal I have ever eaten. So simple but mouthwateringly tasty.

If you could give one positive message to our followers what would it be?

One of my favourite quotes is “Happiness can be found in the darkest of places, if only one remembers to turn on the light”.

I have really found that given the year we have just had, always remember there is light at the end of the tunnel. It may be dim or hard to see at times, but persevere and you will see it. Life can be really tough, so cherish every moment, ride the highs and the lows and remember that nothing ever good comes easy.

Zoella Book Club 2021: Our January to April Reads

We’re excited to get stuck into plot twists, coming of age tales, speculative fiction and Parent Trap vibes with our first three Zoella book club reads of 2021.

New year, new books. Is there anything more exciting than starting a new TBR pile?

We’re excited to get stuck into plot twists, coming of age tales, speculative fiction and Parent Trap vibes with our first three Zoella book club reads of 2021.

Here’s what we’ll be reading for January, February and March…

January – The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

The master of empathy once again demonstrates why he is the most celebrated and inspirational writers on mental health of our age. This beguiling novel about the power of books, second chances and learning how to live will warm your heart this January. Being stuck at home gets infinitely better when you’ve got a membership to The Midnight Library.

The Blurb

Between life and death there is a library.

When Nora Seed finds herself in the Midnight Library, she has a chance to make things right. Up until now, her life has been full of misery and regret. She feels she has let everyone down, including herself. But things are about to change.

The books in the Midnight Library enable Nora to live as if she had done things differently. With the help of an old friend, she can now undo every one of her regrets as she tries to work out her perfect life. But things aren’t always what she imagined they’d be, and soon her choices place the library and herself in extreme danger. Before time runs out, she must answer the ultimate question: what is the best way to live?

February – Untamed by Glennon Doyle

The original publication date for our February book club pick, You Have A Match by Emma Lord has been pushed back, so we’ve had a reshuffle to make sure we’re all on the same page and reading along together. We’ll look forward to reading Lord’s hilarious and heartfelt novel as soon as it lands but for now, we’re going to be inhaling the uproarious and tender best-seller, Untamed by Glennon Doyle.

Ever since it hit the bookshelves last year, Untamed has become the book everyone is reading, recommending, quoting and sharing on their Instagram feed. Part self-help guide, part memoir, Untamed explores how to find your wild and start living life on your terms.

The Blurb

Who were you before the world told you who to be?

Part inspiration, part memoir, Untamed explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world, and instead dare to listen to and trust in the voice deep inside us. From the beloved New York Times bestselling author, speaker and activist Glennon Doyle.

For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her discontent. Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love. Three words flooded her mind: There. She. Is. At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high but soon she realised they had come to her from within. This was the voice she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions and social conditioning. Glennon decided to let go of the world’s expectations of her and reclaim her true untamed self.

Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts.

March – You Have A Match by Emma Lord

From the beloved author of Tweet Cute comes Emma Lord’s, You Have a Match, a hilarious and heartfelt YA novel of romance, sisterhood, and friendship. We could all do with a serotonin boost in these gloomy Winter months and something tells us this wholesome tale of camp shenanigans and Parent Trap revelations will deliver just that.

The Blurb

When Abby signs up for a DNA service, it’s mainly to give her friend and secret love interest, Leo, a nudge. After all, she knows who she is already: Avid photographer. Injury-prone tree climber. Best friend to Leo and Connie…although ever since the B.E.I. (Big Embarrassing Incident) with Leo, things have been awkward on that front.

But she didn’t know she’s a younger sister.

When the DNA service reveals Abby has a secret sister, shimmery-haired Instagram star Savannah Tully, it’s hard to believe they’re from the same planet, never mind the same parents — especially considering Savannah, queen of green smoothies, is only a year and a half older than Abby herself.

The logical course of action? Meet up at summer camp (obviously) and figure out why Abby’s parents gave Savvy up for adoption. But there are complications: Savvy is a rigid rule-follower and total narc. Leo is the camp’s co-chef, putting Abby’s growing feelings for him on blast. And her parents have a secret that threatens to unravel everything.

But part of life is showing up, leaning in, and learning to fit all your awkward pieces together. Because sometimes, the hardest things can also be the best ones.

April – The Kindest Lie by Nancy Johnson

Nancy Johnson’s debut novel, The Kindest Lie, is already making waves ahead of its release in February. Set to be a searing page-turner about race, class, identity and the pursuit of the American Dream, we can’t wait to uncover this nuanced and soul-stirring story.

The Blurb

A promise could betray you.

It’s 2008, and the inauguration of President Barack Obama ushers in a new kind of hope. In Chicago, Ruth Tuttle, an Ivy-League educated Black engineer, is married to a kind and successful man. He’s eager to start a family, but Ruth is uncertain. She has never gotten over the baby she gave birth to-and was forced to leave behind-when she was a teenager. She had promised her family she’d never look back, but Ruth knows that to move forward, she must make peace with the past.

Returning home, Ruth discovers the Indiana factory town of her youth is plagued by unemployment, racism, and despair. As she begins digging into the past, she unexpectedly befriends Midnight, a young white boy who is also adrift and looking for connection. Just as Ruth is about to uncover a burning secret her family desperately wants to keep hidden, a traumatic incident strains the town’s already searing racial tensions, sending Ruth and Midnight on a collision course that could upend both their lives.

Powerful and revealing, The Kindest Lie captures the heartbreaking divide between Black and white communities and offers both an unflinching view of motherhood in contemporary America and the never-ending quest to achieve the American Dream.

Making The Most Of January

Usually, Jan consists of humans bemoaning the weather, getting weirdly into Nutribullets and counting down the days until we can Boomerang the hell out of our wine glasses again but the first month of 2021 just hits different somehow.

Hello January, boy are we pleased to see you. Usually, Jan consists of humans bemoaning the weather, getting weirdly into Nutribullets and counting down the days until we can Boomerang the hell out of our wine glasses again but the first month of 2021 just hits different somehow. It feels uncharacteristically upbeat – something to do with a certain year stealing the misery thunder perhaps – and we’re so very here for the feel-good vibes. Onwards and upwards guys here are 20 things to do to make the most of January.

1 Dismantle the Christmas tree

2 And instantly begrudge 2020 you for insisting you go for that extra foot

3 Toy with the idea of getting your gym membership back, mainly just to humour yourself

4 Look at your diary and realise you’re all booked out and socially exhausted until further notice zzz

5 Unsubscribe from everything – the rescue dog notifications, the Secret Santa family group. Exit them all. Declutter that inbox.

6 Wish for snow…

7 But then realise you had like, 9 whole months of unofficial snow days in 2020

8 Dust things you’ve never thought to dust before, case in point – the extractor fan, when did he move in?

9 Discover that the 17 MIA Twiglets you dropped over Christmas all met in down-the-back-of-the-sofa heaven after all

10 Convince yourself that soup is a worthy lunch choice

11 Rearrange your entire home now Christmas is boxed away

12 And lose all respect for any of your circa 2020 interior styling decisions

13 Streamline your camera roll. If not now, then when?

14 Eat anyone who comments on your weight

15 Mentally prepare yourself for the first proper girls’ night out since Feb 2020. All. The. Feelings.

16 Wrestle with the urge to reinvent yourself… with a Peloton bike

17 Get defensive with the delivery man – “someone’s got to keep ASOS in business”

18 Dream about your Summer travel plans because we can make those now. Probably.

19 Feel the new notebook scaries. It’s a thing.

20 Open the fridge and try to remember what the light of day feels like
